Team Frankie Laine’s partner Benny Hollman passed away on December 12th, 2015 with his loving family around him at his home in Mira Mesa. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his son’s Marc, Eric, daughter Debra, and his 6 Grandchildren. We have all been immensely saddened by his passing, but also deeply grateful to have had him in our lives. His musical legacy began with one of the top High School band’s in San Diego, “The Velvetones”. He married his high school girl friend, Dorothy Goodwalt in 1963. 3 Months later Benny was drafted in the Army. He played with the Officers Club Band. After the Army, Benny’s career continued to grow. In addition to playing the sax and flute, he also directed, composed, and arranged for his band and many others. He performed with the Bill Green Orchestra, and with the Johnny Adamo band. In 1966 he and Jack Maynard formed the “Caliente Brass”. Now as an accomplished musician, composer, arranger, Benny began his Big Band experience. He received several awards for the best big band in San Diego, his “Big Band Explosion”. Benny’s work with the Chargers was legendary. He started with the Chargers in 1978, and was considered the official Charger Band through 2015. Benny believed strongly in giving back to the community, especially his roots in Logan Heights. Because of his efforts, hundreds of school children have been exposed to music. With a grant from the La Jolla Chamber Music Program, Benny initiated a music program at Sherman Elementary School. If the student was still taking lessons after a year had passed, he was able to keep his donated instrument. The students had the rare opportunity to study with professional musicians at no cost to their family. Benny later started a similar program at the King / Caesar Chavez Preparatory Academy. Benny joined Frankie Laine in the early 1990’s. Benny was Frankie’s  last Arranger / Conductor. In 1999, he and Frankie Laine received the American Federation of Musician’s Special Recognition Award, saluting them for having performed benefit concerts across the nation for federation’s emergency fund. Benny Hollman was extremely respected and loved by every musican he hired or played with through his 60 year musical career. Benny will be missed, however, he will never be forgotten.
